SAS Institute offers first intelligent data warehouse solution to leverage ERP applications

Delivering a real return on ERP systems through data warehousing business solutions
By SAS Institute
Johannesburg, 28 May 1998

SAS Institute today announced the availability of SAS/ACCESS interface for R/3, release 2.0, the first in a series of intelligent data warehouse solutions to enable business analysts, initially at SAP AG R/3 user sites, to leverage their organization`s enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. The intelligent warehouse solutions surface and exploit the critical business information housed in ERP and other operational systems into an open, intelligent business decision-making process. "Business professionals are looking for an easy way to turn data into usable information for intelligent business decisions," said Jim Davis, SAS Institute program manager for Data Warehousing. "They need to access diverse business data, guarantee information integrity and quality, meet and exceed customer expectations, and produce a rapid return on their investment. By leveraging existing business data through activities like data warehousing, data mining, business intelligence, and customer relationship management (CRM), business users can be confident that they are driving their business forward. Now they are looking to exploit ERP data to answer pressing business questions such as `why` and `what can we do about it`." Eric Hunley, SAS Institute product manager for intelligent warehouse solutions, said, "Extending the reach of SAS software to ERP vendors like SAP AG, PeopleSoft, Baan, and JD Edwards exemplifies what we do so well - go after data, wherever it is, and turn it into useful information for intelligent decision making. We deliver a complete decision support view of an organization`s data to those making corporate decisions and shaping their company`s future." The new ERP system interface will * surface SAP AG`s R/3 business process model in the SAS data warehouse, using a common metadata repository * surface relevant parts of SAP AG`s software security model in the SAS data warehouse * access SAP AG`s R/3 general ledger from CFO Vision(tm) software - the SAS solution for financial consolidation and reporting * integrate Enterprise Miner software and SAP AG`s R/3 business process model to select, explore, and model data * enhance the performance and optimize capacity of SAP AG`s R/3 using SAS Institute`s IT Service Vision(tm) software * access SAP AG`s R/3 HR data from HR Vision sofware - SAS Institute`s "off-the-shelf" HR information system Now in its 22nd year, SAS Institute is one of the top ten largest independent software vendors in the world, and is the largest privately held software company. The leading provider of data warehousing and decision-support software, the Institute has won the reader-selected 1996 and 1997 Datamation magazine Data Warehousing Product of the Year award and Software Magazine`s Editor`s Choice award for decision-support software. SAS Institute provides an integrated suite of information delivery tools that allow companies to transform the wide variety of data within their organization into information that business users need to make decisions. To make data useful, SAS software collects data from almost every platform and data format; cleans and transforms data into information that users will understand; and stores that information in an open and efficient data warehouse structure. To explore that information, SAS software includes OLAP, query and reporting, EIS, data mining, analysis, data visualization, and application-development interfaces. SAS software is client/server and Web enabled. SAS Institute also delivers business solutions for financial consolidation and reporting, clinical trials analysis, oil and gas analysis and IT service management. Currently, SAS software and business solutions are being used at more than 30,000 business, government, and university sites in more than 120 countries.
