Over the past decade, new innovations in technology have been moving faster than most IT departments can handle, according to financial advisory firm Deloitte.
The focus has been on solidifying information systems, while key business objectives were sometimes forgotten or ignored, the company says.
Deloitte is the sponsor of the second annual CIO Challenge, aimed at providing advice and networking opportunities for CIOs and industry professionals.
The CIO Challenge sets out to transform the traditional roles of CIOs, helping them to develop from technology leaders to strategic business thinkers, the company says.
"The effective use of technology is the enabler for organisations to excel in their business and their profitability," says Leslie Moodley, a director at Deloitte Consulting. "We hope this year`s CIO Challenge will offer valuable insights into how innovation and strategy impacts IT today."
Tahra Sergeant, events manager for the CIO Challenge, says: "Very often, CIOs tend to hide behind technology, looking for solutions within information systems. Instead, the CIO Challenge will help executives to align their company`s IT strategy with the business objectives, allowing them room to develop new skills to meet the changing expectations of business today."
IT personality Ken Jarvis will be master of ceremonies for the CIO Challenge event. Speakers include Peter Armstrong, corporate strategist at BMC Software; Theo Nkone, former CIO of Old Mutual; and Carl Scholtz, executive manager for IT at kulula.com.
Thomas Jankovich, innovation strategy leader at Deloitte Consulting, says he will assist attendees to form a more integrated, strategic approach to IT in their business.
A limited number of seats are still available for this year`s challenge, to be held at the Park Hyatt, in Rosebank, on 14 and 15 November. Bookings can be made online at www.topco.co.za/conferences or by calling (021) 441-2500.
