SAS Institute is for the second year running hosting its SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge, of which the proceeds will go to the Khanya Project, an initiative in the Western Cape.
This year's event will be hosted at the Royal Cape Yacht club on 7 October, and attracts corporate sailing teams from around the country, affording non sailors to sail with an experienced skipper.
Says Pieter Nel, branch manager at SAS Cape Town: "Khanya is an amazing project and we are very proud to be associated with them as an organisation. The schools that we are currently working with, which include two primary schools in Eendekuil (Eendekuil Primary School and Eendekuil Laerskool), are truly deserving and we are looking forward to improving these resources with the money from this year's event."
The Khanya Project was first started in 2001 and is an initiative started by the Western Cape Education Department, designed specifically to measure the impact technology can have on addressing key shortages in educators in schools. The use of technology in schools is to address the socio-economic impact the lack of educators is having on the children of SA, and in this case particularly the Western Cape.
According to its latest statistics Khanya had by the August achieved the following:
* 575 schools have been provided with technology facilities, typically computer laboratories, consisting of between 25 and 40 computers each (LAN networked and internet linked)
* A further 276 schools are in the process of infrastructure preparation for installation next year
* A total of 22 721 PCs have been deployed in these schools
* 14 993 educators have received basic IT training and are receiving ongoing training through the Khanya process of using facilitators
* 496 207 learners are benefiting from using the technology on a daily basis.
Adds Nel: "Khanya have made significant improvements to the lives of the people they have touched in the Western Cape, and their contributions to the children of SA falls strongly in line with SAS's own stated emphasis on education."
