SA`s SMS technology set to expand overseas

The SMS technology developed by Mobile Internet Gateway (MIG) exclusively from a South African base, is set to expand into Europe and eventually Australia, driven by its ability to deliver mass SMS messages without requiring additional hardware, said Derek Fingleson, managing director of Rivonia-based MIG.

"The sheer range of services which our software delivers has stirred interest in the product even from the European market, where bulk SMS technology is well established," says Fingleson.

The technology - which allows a company to integrate its database, the Internet and wireless communication technology, provides instant access to stock levels, order status; or, as a direct marketing tool, advise clients of special offers. "By introducing a database mining component, clients using the technology can develop tailor-made, personalised offers to be sent to specific customers," Fingleson said.

MIG is negotiating potential contracts in the UK and on the continent, and will soon open an office in Australia, once the cellular service providers there achieve a common interface so that messages can be transmitted from one network to another.

"The MIG service can offer two-way interaction, set according to whatever predefined rules the client may want to create. This can take on the form of queries, orders, order status, confirmations, or any specific query relevant to company operations," Fingleson said.

The software is loaded onto the client`s servers - and never leaves it, meaning that all client lists remain in the hands of the user. To do this, MIG has developed its own ETL tool, allowing it to integrate with almost any kind of database, be it Oracle, SQL, DB2, AS4000 and many others.

Once the field merge facility has been activated, it becomes possible for the client company to send out mass SMS mailings at its own discretion, with each message individually addressed to each mobile handset user.

All SMS messages sent or received are logged and can be transformed into an Excel spreadsheet if required. "In addition, the SMS transaction itself is transmitted through specially created secure ports from the client`s server to the MIG gateway. It is encrypted at origin and unencrypted at destination, "all with the security aspect in mind," Fingleson said.

MIG`s South African client base includes government and private companies, spanning all industry sectors. Smaller companies and individuals are also users of MIG`s various systems or Web sites.
