SAS, Sun strengthen global partnership

Johannesburg, 03 Dec 2002

Global business intelligence leader SAS's support for Sun Microsystems' Solaris 9 Operating Environment (OE) further enhances one of the industry's most extensive Unix-based application and solution portfolios that help improve industry practices and business processes.

Continuing in the tradition of joint engineering and design through their long-term partnership, SAS and Sun have been jointly working over the past nine months to improve SAS performance on Solaris 9.

Says Bruce Jones, sales and support manager of SAS Institute SA: "Working together to develop cutting-edge applications, SAS and Sun provide offerings that help businesses navigate swiftly through changing economic climates.

"Since Sun is the most popular Unix-based platform for SAS software, it is important that we continue to invest in our thriving engineering partnership and continue to create innovative products."

Tertius Bezuidenhout, national SE manager at Sun Microsystems SA, comments: "Solaris 9 provides Version 9 of SAS software with a solid foundation for product development that enables performance improvement and multithreaded scalability."

SAS has also announced its continued commitment to providing customer solutions that are aligned with open and standard-based technology.

The company's adoption of Java-based technology and support for the Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) highlights SAS's momentum in providing a new generation of business intelligence software and services that create true enterprise intelligence based on open standards.

Earlier this year, SAS and Sun announced compatibility between SAS's interactive development environment product, AppDEV Studio, and J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition).

"In today's critical business environment, organisations don't have the luxury of time or proprietary dead ends. Open standards adoption is key in solving immediate business requirements in real-time Web environments," says Jones.

In addition, SAS Version 9 software extends existing SAS Version 8 capabilities with Java, enabling developers to more easily create and deploy Java applications.

Concludes Bezuidenhout: "Sun and SAS are taking the risk out of IT investment by integrating and testing business solutions that help our respective customers leverage their most important asset, information."
