Sasol has joined the Open Group and will contribute to the consortium's base of enterprise architecture best practice scenarios.

According to the Open Group's local representative, Real IRM, South African membership of the organisation is among the highest in the world, totalling 8% of all members.

"We are delighted to welcome Sasol to the Open Group," says Real IRM MD Stuart Macgregor. "The company has contributed meaningfully to all of our forums, and we expect this to continue and even accelerate."

Sasol's contribution to the Open Group Architecture Framework (Togaf) is expected to help the company's architects grow skills.

"To allow our architects further professional growth, and to grow their contribution, we had to look beyond the boundaries of our organisation for thought leadership and a meaningful professional challenge," says Pawel Wuzyk, lead enterprise architect at Sasol.

Membership of the Open Group, and participation in shaping Togaf through the forums and via comments, fast-tracks the understanding of the framework on a fundamental level, explains Wuzyk. "The model will allow us to create and understand a complete view of the enterprise with an appropriate level of detail; it will improve our architecture repository and methodology.

"The forum's unique formula provides an opportunity for networking, knowledge sharing and benchmarking across the architecture profession, spanning many industries, from financial institutions, to mining and - something uniquely valuable and difficult to come by," adds Wuzyk.

The Open Group is a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium working towards enabling access to integrated information within and between enterprises, based on open standards and global interoperability.

Other South African organisations listed as members include Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, Business Connexion, Eskom, Fundani Computer Systems and Telkom SA.
