Minister Faith Muthambi has distanced herself from the fake Facebook account created using her name.

Communications minister Faith Muthambi is once again a victim of scammers who have created a Facebook account pretending to represent her.

In March, Muthambi warned the public that a bogus Facebook account had been created using her misspelt surname.

According to a statement, this latest fake account uses the minister's picture taken at a Black Management Forum event and another one with president Jacob Zuma and deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.

A statement says, shortly after the account was created, several government communicators accepted the friend requests from the fake Facebook account.

"I only own one Facebook account and I have never given permission to anyone to create another Facebook account for me and I have since reported the account to Facebook," says Muthambi.

The scammers are already sending bogus letters purporting to come from Muthambi. In the bogus letter, the fraudsters are requesting people with "capabilities to carry out developmental projects" in the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) coalitions.

Muthambi adds: "While we are investigating the creation of this false account, don't be duped by these bogus letters."

The minister also distanced herself from another bogus Facebook account with a profile picture updated on 3 May.
