Local auto-identification and wireless mobile computing company, Scantec, has announced the formation of RangeGate, a new company focusing on providing mobile business information solutions. Launched this week, the company is headed up by Andrew Fosbrook as Managing Director. Gordon Edwards, current chairman of Scantec - has been appointed executive chairman of the new company.
According to Fosbrook, the new company will draw on engineering skills, strategic alliances with key mobile networking companies such as Cisco and Nokia, and consulting and integration skills to provide companies with enterprise-strength mobile information solutions. "Scantec has built up substantial intellectual capital in the mobile commerce arena, and the new company will harness that to provide mobile solutions that integrate and extend our customers` e-commerce capabilities."
In addition to its professional services division, RangeGate will take ownership of Scantec`s research and development unit to develop new mobile technologies. RangeGate already uses its in-house developed wireless mobile gateway, Intersys, extensively at client sites. Intersys allows a number of different mobile devices to integrate seamlessly to ERP solutions such as SAP, J D Edwards and Baan. This solution has been installed at several client sites, including Cadbury, Coca-Cola, Daimler Chrysler and General Motors.
"Successful e-commerce hinges on an organisation`s ability to integrate its information systems, as well as the ability to take its business to the customer," says Fosbrook. "In both cases, mobile technology takes organisations to the next level of effective e-business. It provides dynamic links among an organisation`s systems, its business processes, and empowers employees at the point of customer contact. In addition, it provides transactional and data collection facilities beyond an organisations` physical boundaries."
Fosbrook adds that mobile technology will be key in companies` drives to maximise their investment in information systems, reduce total cost of ownership, and improve customer relationship management. "In fact, all the new business waves hitting us today will be fundamentally impacted by mobile technology."
Scantec will continue to focus on its core business of providing a wide range of Automatic Identification products mobile computers and wireless networking products both to large end users and through its extensive reseller channel.
