Scantec, a distributor of enterprise solutions, data collection and automated identity equipment in southern Africa, has partnered with Toshiba TEC Europe to bring Toshiba's 7-series range of point-of-sale (POS) solutions to the South African market, the company announced.

Scantec GM Antony Makins, speaking in Johannesburg this week, said the move signifies the company's first venture into POS solutions.

This will position Scantec as a one-stop shop for its resellers' clients, who will now have access, through a single supplier, to bar coding, scanning, printing and now POS solutions, he added.

Makins explained the partnership enables to bundle products to create complete front office and POS solutions. Resellers will benefit from improved pricing and a single point of accountability, he said.

Toshiba's entry onto the South African POS market means the company will compete against well-established names in this sector, such IBM and DigiPos.

Graham Vorster, Scantec CTO, said Toshiba's solutions include biometric and presence-enhancing technology, but said these components will not form part of the initial POS solutions that will be available in SA.

"At the moment, we are looking at solutions that will fit well with our existing solutions," he said.

Peter Dodd, Toshiba UK POS sales director, explained the company sees considerable potential in the South African market. Toshiba, he said, is committed to research and development that is focused on minimising the total cost of ownership.
