Following the recent postings of the group`s interim results the Philips Monitor Division of Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD) is also reporting increased sales. Having opened its doors for business in July last year the Division has already sold in excess of 6000 monitors. "In its first month of operations, we sold around 300 monitors, reaching a high at around 1300 units at the end of October," says Dereck Hindry, General Manager, Philips products at SDD. Following a slow year`s end in terms of units shipped Hindry notes that sales picked up in January 1998 with over 1200 units shipping. He also points to a new trend which has emerged through these results. "While sales of the traditional 14-inch monitors peaked in September last year Popularity of the 15-inch, 17-inch and 21-inch units is burgeoning," he says. "Fourteen inch monitors are still the biggest selling models for us," he says, "while 17 inch sales have seen the most growth," he says. Hindry believes the reason behind these figures is the long-standing clone manufacturers hold over the 14-inch market and growing ergonomical consciousness in the local market as a whole - calling for affordable units with larger screens. An additional factor in the rise of the 17-inch segment is the growing need for monitor upgrades. Regarding the division`s plans for the future Hindry says he intends selling upwards of 5 000 monitors per month. He believes these figures can easily be reached as it has introduced its new national dealer incentive scheme.
