Freda du Toit, executive director of JSE-AltX-listed SilverBridge Holdings and SDT Financial Software Solutions, is to present at the forthcoming Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference in Cape Town.
Organised by The Open Group and its local representative, Real IRM, the conference brings together the world's leading practitioners in enterprise architecture and related disciplines, including service-oriented architecture (SOA).
"We have long understood the need for the insurance sector to redefine and reinvent itself," says Du Toit. "This is due to one simple observation: the sector's processes have made it inefficient, and it needs drastic process redefinition if it is to avoid a total crisis.
"By now we are all familiar with the work done by the Pension Fund Adjudicator between 2005 and late 2006," notes Du Toit. "This caused a great deal of tension with insurance companies, which were shown to be delivering below-average returns to investors and policy-holders due to their high costs. These high costs in turn are a consequence of ageing, poorly defined processes, which are fulfilled by applications running on costly mainframes.
"We have developed an alternative approach for the insurance sector, one which removes the duplications, bottlenecks and redundancies that characterise IT in this sector. With this approach we are now aligned with the principles of enterprise architecture, as we believe this will yield the greatest long-term benefits."
Du Toit will present on 13 March, the second day of the conference. Around 200 people from South Africa and around the world will attend the conference, the second to be held in South Africa.
