Trouble with the Seacom undersea cable - that plunged several local businesses into Internet darkness this week - is expected to be repaired by 10pm tonight.
International access on the cable came to a halt on Sunday, thanks to a fault on the Mediterranean section of the SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable system, which Seacom uses to connect to London.
According to Seacom, the repairs have affected Internet access in several regions across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, which rely on the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable for international access.
While it appears that international access has now been restored, Seacom promises that full capacity will be up by 10pm tonight. “Operators that have opted to work with Seacom to find alternative channels have been routed to an Internet access point in India to maintain service,” the consortium explains.
On Monday, information from SEA-ME-WE 4 owners indicated that access may only be back on Friday; however, Seacom says the problems are well on their way to being resolved.
Seacom has promised to update customers as more information becomes available.
