Seagate makes $2.3bn

Seagate Technology sold more than 37 million disk drive units and made revenue of $2.3 billion (R22.9 billion) for the quarter ended 2 January 2009, states Earth Times.

The hard disk drives and storage solutions developer also made a net loss of $496 million (R4.9 billion), and net loss per share of $1.02 (R10.20) during the second quarter.

Net losses also included $18 million (R179 million) of purchased intangibles amortisation and other charges associated with acquisitions and restructuring.

Intransa, Convergint team up

Intransa and Convergint Technologies, a systems integrator of electronic security, fire alarm, life safety and building systems, have formed a new sales alliance, reports Earth Times.

“With hundreds of professionals operating out of nearly two-dozen offices across the US and Canada, Convergint will dramatically increase our market reach in the design, installation and maintenance of physical systems,” says Intransa VP of video system and applications George Vaiser.

“The physical security management and video storage developer is adamant its IP storage is a great addition to its product portfolio, and will be matched well with Convergint's specialisation in providing building system technologies that meet customer needs.”

Cisco eyes server market

Cisco is pushing ahead with plans to release server hardware and advanced virtualisation software, says The Inquirer.

The switches and routers seller has raked in more than $40 billion (R398 billion) a year in revenue and with healthy, 65% gross profit margins.

Cisco believes it can slip into the $50 billion (R497 billion) server market by selling hardware and software management systems to span whole data centres, and possibly deal in storage too.
