Seagate Software, a leader in Business Intelligence software, has announced its intention to withdraw from the OLAP Council, an industry advocacy group established to promulgate the benefits of OLAP technology for business intelligence applications and establish an open OLAP API.
Seagate Software has determined that more benefit for its customers will derive from supporting potential de-facto industry standards, such as Microsoft`s recently announced OLE DB for OLAP and any others that develop.
"We were an early participant in the OLAP Council, which has largely succeeded in its original mission to help establish OLAP in the marketplace," said Greg Kerfoot, chief strategic officer at Seagate Software. "By supporting Microsoft`s proposed OLE DB for OLAP we believe we are hastening the trend to a single open OLAP standard, which will be of benefit to customers and vendors alike."
Seagate Software had been an active member of the OLAP Council since shortly after the group was launched early in 1995: Holistic Systems, now part of Seagate Software, joined the Council in March of 1995.
Seagate Holos has a long history of working within real-world information systems, with standards actually in use. Seagate Holos was the first Business Intelligence product to offer live-links to data in relational databases and recently became the first to offer an ODBC-based interface to its multi-dimensional OLAP engine.
Seagate Software is about to launch an OLAP-enabled version of its Seagate Crystal Info product, code-named BlackWidow, which incorporates the world-class OLAP technology of Seagate Holos into Seagate Crystal Info`s enterprise-wide reporting infrastructure.
BlackWidow brings together the low-cost entry point of end-user OLAP tools with the robustness of server based OLAP and also offers a secure migration path to large scale, operational Seagate Holos systems.
