Security vendors need to build an expert community that is interested in the matter of IT security. This community should exist to provide a holistic overview of the security landscape, in order to create awareness and foster communication between interested parties.
This is the view of Danil Gridasov, Web projects manager at Kaspersky Lab, who says the Kaspersky Securelist Web site was designed as a platform to provide information about malware, spam and internal threats. This resource aims to incorporate the expert knowledge of some of the IT security industry's leading specialists.
He says Securelist is the latest incarnation of the Viruslist site, which has been in existence for nearly 10 years. “The Russian Securelist site was unveiled in June 2009, with the English version introduced on 6 April 2010.
“The goal was to update and refresh the Viruslist Web site with a new design to provide new content and abilities.
“The site has been publicised mainly through the use of cross-linking and search engine optimisation,” says Gridasov, adding that Twitter and Facebook will also be used to promote the content of the English version of Securelist.
Asked whether social media has been a major influence in driving traffic to the site, Gridasov said: “We have no idea as we just started. Our goal is to provide as many people as possible with our content, not just on the Securelist site itself.”
education and awareness.
“There were no real expectations set,” says Gridasov. He adds that it's too early to tell for the English version of Securelist. “The Russian version has seen a growth of visitors by approximately 27% since it was released in June 2009.”
Gridasov says most of the visitors are from the US and China, and doesn't expect the demographic to change too much, although he is optimistic the site will reach a larger market.
ITWeb asked how confident Kaspersky Labs was surrounding the security of its own site, as a Web site dedicated to providing information about security threats could be a target for hacking.
He says the site was completely developed in-house, and built on Kaspersky's own custom technologies. “Every Kaspersky Lab Web site goes through a mandatory security check and vulnerabilities scan as part of the pre-launch procedure,” explains Gridasov.
“Our Web sites provide an e-mail address which can be used to report any vulnerabilities discovered. Patching any vulnerabilities discovered in our Web sites is a top priority for our Web development team,” he concludes.
