Securing the remote office

Symantec Middle East/Africa announces new cost-effective integrated security appliance
Johannesburg, 05 Nov 2004

Symantec MEA recently announced the launch of a new firewall appliance, the Symantec Gateway Security 400 Series. Designed for remote and branch office sites, this comprehensive solution provides firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, anti-virus policy enforcement, content filtering, virtual private networking (VPN) and gateway networking functionality in a single, easy-to-use appliance.

In addition, the appliance can function as a secure wireless LAN access point and, with the appropriate plug-ins, provides functionality to allow larger businesses to remotely manage thousands of appliances, define groups, manage sites and roll-out policy or configurations across the group.

"Many large enterprises have a number of remote branch offices that need to connect to the enterprise network for real-time access to critical business applications and data," said Patrick Evans, regional manager at Symantec Africa. "The Symantec Gateway Security 400 Series provides converged functionality that enables users to reduce costs by using the Internet to transfer data from remote offices to the enterprise private network hub."

"In SA, many companies attempt to maximise their investment by running a head office in one of the major centres and managing satellite offices remotely. Critical staff, including the IT manager, must then travel from site to site. This often leads to increased costs and reduced productivity and efficiency," adds Evans. "This appliance will allow businesses to dramatically reduce travelling expenses and wasted time by remotely managing IT administration across their group."

The Symantec Gateway Security 400 Series consists of multifunction firewall appliances that provide manageable security for remote and branch offices of medium to large enterprises. Designed for ease-of-use, these appliances require little technical expertise to install and operate, but offer advanced security capabilities to handle remote and branch office needs. Customers can also gain cost savings by utilising the included VPN feature to create secure connections, rather than using expensive leased-lines.

The series is available through Symantec's worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors and systems integrators. Organisations seeking a reseller or distributor should contact Symantec at https://partnernet.symantec.com/internet/locator/Locator01.asp.
