Security cameras get smarter

Johannesburg, 21 Nov 2006

Siemens has developed a video surveillance system that uses a specially developed algorithm to identify intruders.

Once an intruder is identified, the Sistore CX EDS system triggers an alarm in the control centre and automatically begins the suspect with other available cameras.

The innovation was driven by a need to have a backup to security guards, as studies have shown that even when watching only two monitors, after 22 minutes a guard will miss about 95% of what is going on.

The Sistore system "learns" the normal background and pattern of activity in the area covered by the surveillance cameras, enabling the video sensors to focus on any deviations.

Siemens says the system can be combined with existing intranet structures, meaning any number of video signals can be linked to it and analysed. The images can also be viewed on a PC monitor anywhere in the world via the .

Siemens is installing a Sistore system for the 2006 Asian Games, in Doha, later this year. About 1 300 cameras will be linked to a system to help keep the capital of Qatar safe during the games, which will take place in the first two weeks of December.
