Security in a box

Johannesburg, 23 May 2001

In a bid to offer local companies the opportunity to acquire international network security standards, Netxactics has announced that it will act as local distributor for the network protection product, X-Kryptor.

X-Kryptor is an encryption appliance that protects passwords and sensitive data on corporate TCP/IP-based networks, as well as virtual private networks. All encryption is performed in the hardware by a dedicated 64-bit RISC processor, which effectively eliminates the processing overheads associated with server-based encryption.

According to Brett Myroff, CEO of Netxactics, the product handles up to 2 000 concurrent users on a single appliance. It can also easily be stacked to handle a wider user base.

"This dedicated data encryption device is most often used to encrypt commercially sensitive data travelling across the corporate intranet, dial-up links and virtual private networks, as well as the Internet," says Myroff. "The product is integrated within the network between the intranet and server room, encrypting and decrypting data as it leaves and enters."

Myroff explains that the product functions by physically separating the network into a trusted server area or safe room, and an un-trusted area - which includes the client and Wide Area Network (WAN). "This means that data travelling across the un-trusted network is encrypted, while data within the safe room remains unencrypted."

The product features ARC4 1024 bit key length encryption, coupled with a dedicated 64-bit RISC processor capable of handling large encryption tasks.

"It is a security product that works transparently and its cipher stream technology further ensures a negligible impact on network performance," adds Myroff.

In its standard form, X-Kryptor encrypts data travelling between PCs and servers. The use of private and public encryption keys provides a measure of authentication. However for stronger authentication, Myroff suggests that X-Kryptor be used in conjunction with either RSA SecureID or TopSoft-Access, another NetXactics product.

TopSoft Access provides token-based authentication for Windows 2000 and NT. A range of tokens can be used with TS-Access including smart cards, USB tokens and touch memory devices.

"TS Access is configurable for access controls that provide automated login and logout, while also allowing the locking of workstations. In the event of unauthorised tampering, this TS tool will prevent the operating system from booting and thus prevent unauthorised access to the system and data," says Myroff.
