Security of mobile devices beefed up

Safend Protector secures all ports from data theft
Johannesburg, 17 Oct 2005

The illegal accessing of company and organisational data through unprotected network endpoints has been dealt a swift blow by leading endpoint security firm Safend with the launch of its specialised software solution called Safend Protector.

The new product provides the most comprehensive and tamper-proof endpoint security available. It controls data access from the physical ports of all enterprise endpoints, such as USB, FireWire, WiFi, Bluetooth, Infrared (IrDA) and CD/DVDs. Safend Protector is sold and supported across SA by Magix Integration, a leading enterprise risk management company.

"Data is as susceptible to theft or introduction of malicious code via removable media such as the Internet," said Amir Lubashevsky, director of Magix Integration. "Safend Protector was developed to give IT managers iron-clad control over enterprise endpoints, yet keep access management simple. Managers can set policies regarding which user can connect which peripheral device across all communication ports, and be sure those policies are enforced with the industry`s strongest tamper-resistant lockdown."

Safend Protector helps organisations seal up one of the most significant vulnerabilities in their network security strategy. Operating at the kernel level, IT managers can set granular policies regarding peripheral device connectivity. Anti-tampering features make modifying or removing the software virtually impossible for end-users.

"Companies have no idea how vulnerable they are," said Kevin Mitnick, author of Art of Deception and Art of Intrusion. "It doesn`t take a person with hacking skills to steal information in today`s computing environment. Technology has just made it a whole lot easier for the bad guys to commit theft and fraud. If an industrial spy or criminal insider were looking to steal data, he or she may plug in an iPod or a USB flash drive to quickly acquire a target`s proprietary information. Safend is the first security company to fully address the substantial risks associated with unauthorised use of a computer system`s endpoints in a secure fashion."

Safend Protector is already gaining international acclaim. Allan Pomerantz, CSO for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, said: "While for some companies, the big issue is the theft of intellectual property, our major concern is malware being uploaded into our system via an external drive."

Gene Peters, Director of Information Services for the Exchange, agrees. "We have 400 computers to manage. Utilising Safend`s product was a decision that allowed us to maintain our current security level without rebuilding PCs. It`s well thought-out and performs even better than we expected, covering a wider scope than all the other solutions we considered." Included with Safend Protector is Safend Auditor, a free analysis tool that provides a list of all devices that are or have been connected to a network within the last six months, spotlighting endpoint vulnerabilities. Security policies can then be customised by organisations to fit their needs, whether it`s company-wide, by department or individual.
