Thursday night's Carte Blanche Consumer programme once again highlighted a huge consumer's dilemma. In recent years, purchasing a printer (desktop or multifunction) has become relatively inexpensive; however, the cost of the printer cartridges (ink or toner) has escalated so dramatically that in some cases, just one cartridge costs more than a complete new printer.
Each and every printer in the marketplace only accepts specific cartridges and the purchaser is forced to buy the appropriate type. Of course, cartridges can be refilled, but this practice too has its pitfalls, with many voices warning of the damage that refilled cartridges can do to a printer.
Printing in itself is a wasteful practice - printers perform a “dumb” function by spitting ink onto a page whenever demanded by the user. This results in much wastage and also duplication in ink deployment, resulting in an ink/toner cartridge's replacement relatively quickly after a certain number of pages have been printed.
The challenge for those cartridge purchase blues is to best utilise each and every cartridge that has been purchased, and here there is light at the end of the printing tunnel. A revolutionary new software product, Pretonsaver, distributed in SA by OPT (Optimum Print Technology www.optsa.co.za) of Edenvale, is now available.
The PretonSaver print management software utilises complicated mathematical algorithms to optimise the deployment of ink/toner on a printed page. By utilising PretonSaver, real savings of 25% to 50% and more on the usage of ink/toner is achieved.
Compatible with every printer make and type (except dotmatrix/ribbon printers), there is a PretonSaver solution for printer fleets small, medium and large.
Apart from the potential savings to be achieved, PretonSaver allows the customer to implement rules for each and every user, for example, whether a user is permitted to make colour copies or not, which printers are accessible to users, forcing users to use duplex printing etc, and PretonSaver reports on the printing activities in the organisation, right down to per user level. To top it all, by saving on usage of harmful toner/ink and by means of the various rules, using less paper, the environmentally friendly green credentials of this new product cannot be disputed.
