Local security consultancy SensePost has been invited to address the security community at the "Black Hat Briefings" at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, at the end of July.
SensePost will present a paper called "bi-directional communications in a heavily protected environment", which will explore new ways that hackers could use to completely control computers that have been infected by Trojans or viruses, even when those computers are heavily protected using traditional methods.
"This work is very important," says Roelof Temmingh, a member of SensePost's Security Assessment team, "because it could radically increase the impact viruses like Melissa and Nimda have on connected companies. We have to consider new ways of defending ourselves against these kinds of threats."
The invitation was extended to the local team after its February presentation at the New Orleans Black Hat conference. The conferences are intended to keep IT professionals on both sides of the fence - "black hats" and "white hats" - abreast of the latest developments in security.
"Black Hat is considered the most important event on the security calendar worldwide and SA's presence serves as a reminder that we have important contributions to make to world affairs," says Temmingh.
