Sentech encourages girls to step into the ICT world

South Africa's ICT industry has a serious shortage of skilled women and there is a need to move towards encouraging the participation of previously disadvantaged individuals, especially women.

In its fourth year of participation, Sentech hopes to encourage young women to consider a career in ICT, a somewhat traditionally male dominated industry.

Sentech aims to do this by participating in Cell C's 'Take a Girl Child to Work Day' which provides a platform for young women to get exposure to a vocation in telecommunications and to observe, participate and learn about the industry.

Sentech regional office in Durban hosted eight learners from Sivananda FET and 12 from Avoca Secondary School. Learners were taken through to Sentech's Alverstone Transmitter site for an educational tour.

The theme for 2007 is "take initiative" which aims to encourage female learners to proactively seek information and identify opportunities that will enable them to realise their potential, take an active role and make an informed decision about their futures.

"The objective of the day is to expose female learners to what the ICT industry is about, and to show how exciting industry is and the many opportunities it offers. From this experience the girls will walk away with a deeper understanding of why technology is the drive behind the development of our country," says Sentech's CEO, Dr Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane.

The learners' day began with an address from Sentech's CEO, Mokone-Matabane about the exiting opportunities presented by the ICT industry, before heading out for a tour at the Sentech Tower.
