Golf scoring as it happens, live on the Internet is introduced to SA this weekend via broadband wireless (BBW) technology provided by ICT company Sentech to the Women's World Cup of Golf.
The event is a practical demonstration of the benefits of fast, reliable Net access via Sentech's MyWireless product. This BBW product uses high mast radio to deliver always-on Internet connectivity to receiver kits tuned to the encrypted signals.
Michelle Potgieter, Sentech's General Manager for Marketing and Communications, pointed out that the Women's World Cup at Fancourt in George is an ideal opportunity to spotlight the wireless benefits of MyWireless. Users don't need a fixed telephone line - a signal bounced from a satellite to a Sentech high mast does the trick, even when the action takes place in the middle of a golf course.
Sentech has set up a temporary high mast at Fancourt's halfway house to carry the MyWireless signal.
Sentech is not only a tournament sponsor, but a technical sponsor. It is collaborating with Internet Solutions (developer of the live scoring software) and Acer (official supplier of all computer hardware at the WWC) to create the capacity for live Web site updates at every stage of the World Cup.
On-course scorers will feed the latest information into tablet PCs to be carried to a central server via the MyWireless link. The MyWireless platform will also facilitate Net access for journalists at the media centre, players and Internet caf'e patrons.
Every MyWireless-enabled fan will be in constant touch with the state of play.
The Women's World Cup of Golf started on 11 February at the Links, Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George.
The World Cup is supported by the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour, the LPGA Tour and the WPGA of South Africa. Players from over 20 countries will compete for prize-money of $1 million in a 54-hole contest that takes on a different format every day.
