[Chris Tredger] The formation of a partnership between agricultural and foods product and services group Senwes and Destiny e-commerce was celebrated at a black tie event in Rosebank last night.

Enabling electronic grain sales and expected savings are just two spin-offs that Senwes` Grain Services division expects to benefit from the partnership.

The adoption of e-commerce will also mean a complete transformation of the business, which previously sent 40 000 faxes per month in order to track the sale, delivery and payment of its products to its client base.

"We have worked very closely with Destiny for over a year in order to reach the point we are now at," said e-business manager at Senwes, Flip Fourie. He added that the Grain Services division was selected because the division`s procedures and documentation entailed a manual procedure.

According to Wilhelm Greyling, account manager at Destiny, the project took place on a "reverse roll-out" basis.

"Usually e-commerce implementations take place from the client`s side, in a 'one to many` scenario where doing business electronically is simply made a condition of trade for that company`s many different suppliers," explained Greyling.

He added that in the case of Grain , things are operating in reverse as the supplier has taken the initiative of becoming e-commerce enabled and is encouraging all its clients to do the same.

Destiny e-commerce forms part of Datatec and has been in partnership with General Electric Information Services since January 1999.

Speaking at last night`s event, president of General Electric, Alistair Stewart, highlighted the key elements that help to aid the process of growth in business. He said these include globalisation, e-commerce, services and six-sigma quality.
