Within the service-driven network of the new economy, systems management and an integrated management platform are playing an increasingly important role. To assist in this, Sun Microsystems has introduced comprehensive and proactive management software.
Sun Management Center software delivers improved centralised, automated and proactive system management by bringing IT managers closer to the goal of having systems that are always monitored and always managed.
The software helps IT managers increase service levels - provide continuous access to data, applications, the network and devices - and simplify administration to lower total cost of operation. It is designed to address many of the challenges that IT managers now face.
"IT managers today are challenged with delivering ever-increasing levels of uptime and availability," says Tertius Bezuidenhout, national systems engineer manager at Sun Microsystems SA.
"Sun Management Center software not only provides a tool to increase efficiency, but also delivers more sophisticated system analysis, instrumentation and configuration management. Delivering higher availability and increased performance in the network is dependent on better system-level monitoring and management.
"Management goes hand in hand with the flexibility of the Internet and reliability of the data centre. This is where Sun Management Centre contributes to system uptime and predicted failure monitoring. This is a useful management tool for financial institutions, telcos and service providers running Sun technology," adds Bezuidenhout.
Features of Sun Management Center 3.0 provide:
Group operations capability lets IT managers manage the server and services installation of modules or updates, as well as operations or tasks, can be applied to thousands of Sun systems throughout the network once - rather than individually;
Enhanced alarm management - intelligent, autonomous agents provide heightened predictive management;
Hardware diagnostic suite provides comprehensive online diagnostics and testing that runs simultaneously with applications;
Web interface allows IT managers to view and manage Sun systems from a browser, anywhere on the Net;
GUI module builder provides powerful easy-to-use interface for developing custom modules; and
Support for the new UltraSPARC III-based Sun Fire and Sun Blade systems for centralisation and investment protection
The Sun Management Center management framework offers the investment protection and simplicity of single-point management for the entire range of Sun servers and desktops, the Solaris operating environment, Sun software applications, selected storage systems, including the latest Sun StorEdge T3 subsystems.
In addition, as part of the goal of increased service levels, Sun Remote Services leverages Sun Management Center to remotely monitor and manage customers' Sun environments.
In addition to managing Sun systems, the software fits seamlessly with premier heterogeneous enterprise management platforms, including Computer Associates' Unicenter TNG, HP Openview VantagePoint Operations and Tivoli Enterprise Software.
