Infonetics Research - a US-based research house -- has released its findings from its worldwide service provider core and edge hardware market research. Total revenues for service provider core and edge hardware totalled $6.75 billion in 1999 and are forecasted to grow to $12.6 billion in 2000.
"Revenues for edge/aggregation routers alone totalled $1.3 billion in 1999, and we see that growing 57% to $2.1 billion by 4Q00," says analyst Kevin Mitchell of Infonetics Research. "Some impressive edge hardware was introduced in 1999 - revenues for IP services routers and voice/data switches are already set for triple-digit growth this year. Add that to recent customer win announcements from companies like CoSine and Convergent and you`ve got the makings of a very exciting market."
Mitchell notes that Cisco continues to dominate the $706 million IP/multi-service core router market, but Juniper has made impressive inroads into the market. "We forecast this segment of the core market to grow 152% to $1.8 billion this year because the demand for more and faster core routers is increasing as service provider networks continue to grow at a mercurial rate," he forecasts.
Infonetics Research`s Service Provider Core and Edge Hardware market share service forecasts the market for voice/data switches, voice over DSL gateways, ATM edge switches, multi-service edge/aggregation routers, subscriber management routers, IP services routers, DSLAMs, cable modem access concentrators, ATM core switches, and IP/multi-service core routers.
