Lyndall Shope-Mafole has vacated her position as director-general of the Department of Communications (DOC) with immediate effect, she told ITWeb today.

Shope-Mafole, whose appointment as the most senior public servant within the DOC was supposed to run until 2011, will leave her office today and the position will be advertised as vacant.

“Myself and the minister [Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri] have come to an agreement for me to leave. Cabinet does not have to give their approval as we have agreed to my request to shorten my contract,” she says.

Shope-Mafole notes that speculation about her relationship with the minister being under stress for some time is not true.

She also states there has been no political pressure brought to bear on her to leave.

“I have had no request from the ANC [African National Congress] to leave. Any talk about political pressure is nonsense.”

Shope-Mafole says she will work full time for the Congress of the People (Cope) party.

In November, she left the ruling ANC to join Cope - a move that surprised many as she comes from a family who has been ANC party stalwarts for several generations.
