VIRUSES ARE SET to spread exponentially this year as the Internet is adopted as a communication standard by millions of additional users while local and wide area networks will also continue to increase dramatically. And with people increasingly relying on the information in their computers, the need for preventive measures to counter viruses and hard disk crashes has never been more crucial. So says Hilary Lewis, Symantec product manager at Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), whose Technology Showcase which tours the country in March and April will provide resellers and end-users an unprecedented opportunity to find out about the latest developments in anti-virus technology. According to Lewis, Symantec has invested in significant research to identify the everyday problems of PC users and to developed an `umbrella` strategy offering easy-to-use technologies which keep computers safe and reliable. Norton Safe on the Web, for example, an interactive on-line resource, provides users with easy access to a wealth of virus expertise and solutions all in one central location. But it isn`t only viruses which threaten PCs. The occurrence of computer crashes is increasing and Norton CrashGuard was introduced to protect computers against total or partial information blackout. It`s designed for all users ranging from the home, SoHo and corporate environments Visitors to the SDD Technology Showcase will also be able to find out more about Norton AntiVirus Version 4 (NAV), the company`s flagship product and the best seller for the home market and users without strong technical resources. It`s ability to detect and repair viruses makes this a "must have" product, Lewis says. A major frustration for users is the presence of outdated software on their PCs. This can be rectified simply with Norton Uninstall, a program which ensures that any new installation will not cripple existing applications. It automatically cleans up the hard drive each time it`s booted. Free online updates and software patches are also provided. Symantec has addressed the problem of users requiring up to date drivers with Norton Utilities V3. Norton Web Services, an Internet based application running under Utilities, updates drivers and patches for third party applications. The SDD Technology showcase, which provides the channel and end-users an unprecedented opportunity to view the latest `best of breed` IT software and hardware products from the world`s top vendors, kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
