After a 10-year stint as CEO of Siemens Southern Africa, Klaus D"oring yesterday bid an official farewell to the local Siemens office when he handed over the reins to Pete da Silva.

D"oring will now assume a non-executive position on the board of the mother company in Germany.

Da Silva is the first new local CEO in the region since Siemens established its presence here over a century ago.

In his farewell speech, D"oring pointed out that southern Africa`s regional instability could prove detrimental to the development of its businesses.

"I find that the region is too internally-focused. It tends to focus more on the internal issues and sometimes neglects the potential that exists beyond its bounds, and this could keep it from achieving the type of success that has been attained in regions like the Far East," D"oring pointed out.

Siemens Southern Africa chairman Rudi Lamprecht also noted that although his company has had great success in the region, it has somehow lost out on some of its intended profit due to the fact that transportation systems, power generation and distribution projects have not been ventured into at the pace it expected.

In his address, Da Silva applauded D"oring for his efforts in fostering the development of black empowerment initiatives within Siemens and its business partners, and his commitment to contributing to many of SA`s developmental initiatives.
