Siemens, Vodacom offer adult-content filtering

Electronics and telecommunications company Siemens has partnered with Vodacom to bring adult-content filtering applications to the cellular operator`s subscribers.

"Users will be able to set whether they want a particular phone to receive adult content or not - so a parent can activate the for their child`s phone, for instance," says Ross Templeton, solutions manager in packet technologies at Siemens.

He expects it will be made freely available to all Vodacom subscribers, though was unable to say when the operator plans to deploy the technology, which is understood to be developed and ready for roll-out.

The filtering mechanism blocks information from certain sites and numbers, and identifies certain words and images that will also be blocked.

Fred Maurus, divisional manager of product marketing at Siemens, places a tentative figure of around R1 million to the cost of developing the software.

Vodacom was unable to officially respond to ITWeb regarding the partnership by the time of publication. However, a source close to the matter says the software should be available soon.
