SingTel, Optus join VMware vCloud
SingTel and its Australian subsidiary Optus have been selected to join the VMware vCloud data centre service programme, reports Market Watch.
The relationship empowers SingTel and Optus to help customers seamlessly accelerate their journey to cloud computing.
Bill Chang, SingTel business group's executive vice-president says: "By providing the benefits of world-class computing resources without the heavy costs and complexities of owning and managing ICT infrastructure, our cloud computing services give our customers a vital competitive edge."
Green practices lack maturity
Fujitsu claims while awareness of green IT used by a company's computing departments is widespread, green IT practices as a whole lack maturity in every corner of the globe, states GreenBiz.com.
The areas that show slow progress include data centre management, networking, communications, cloud computing and end-user efforts such as computers and printers.
The survey of CIOs and IT professionals in Australia, India, UK and US found that among IT departments there was some progress made on data centre energy efficiency and smarter management of PC fleets and peripherals, but that expanding the reach of green IT beyond computers and into a company's footprint remains almost unknown.
Complexity a top concern for SMEs
According to an IDC worldwide study of small and medium-size enterprises in the manufacturing industry, 58.9% of SMEs cite complexity as a critical issue, says Supply Chain Standard.com.
A lack of clear visibility into market demand coupled with long supply chains and a pressure to reduce costs have all placed a heavy emphasis on the need for far more sophisticated ICT systems.
Ronald Teijken, director of industry marketing, manufacturing and logistics at Sterling Commerce, believes that, although enterprise resource planning (ERP) has provided a standardised system for major processes, the effects of the recession have meant that traditional supply chains have changed considerably and ERP systems are not well suited to support the extended supply chain processes.
