The State IT Agency (SITA) is to appoint an ombudsman to ensure credibility in its procurement process of ICT equipment and services for the government, and will set up provincial offices to ensure this succeeds.
Newly appointed SITA CEO Mavuso Msimang says the procurement process "must be efficient, transparent and impervious to potential corruption".
The agency has taken steps to ensure that provincial businesses, including black empowerment companies, participate in its IT procurement processes.
"Progress has been made in setting up resources in Cape Town, with offices planned in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo in the near future," explains Msimang.
SITA processed more than 300 tenders at a value of R2.8 billion in the last financial year.
"There is no doubt a professionally run and secured centralised procurement service can save the government millions of rands. Over R100 million in savings were realised during the last financial year," Msimang adds.
