Size does count: Smaller is better and just as powerful

Johannesburg, 26 Aug 2003

As everything in the world of technology shrinks over time, it`s only logical that the standard desktop PC will follow suit and provide users with a smaller unit delivering more desk space without compromising on power. Leading the pack in the production of small form-factor desktop workstations, Tarsus Technologies has launched the HPWorkstation xw3100.

"The xw3100 provides users with an optimal combination of small size and expandability, without losing performance," says Andre Wollheim, HP product manager at Tarsus. "Additionally it boasts serviceability features that will make technicians` jobs much simpler: these include an access cover that can be removed via a single latch; tool-free AGP and PCI card, and even motherboard removal; and colour-coded cables and connectors."

The system can take two full-height PCI slots and one low-profile AGP card. A networking connection is built in as standard, and the Gbit LAN functionality ensures that the workstation will meet corporate networking needs over the long-term.

"Ease of use is expanded with two front USB 2.0 ports and front audio plugs," Wollheim continues. "A `floppy-free` option is available, allowing users to include other 3.5-inch devices - such as a second hard drive - in the spare bay and a full 5.25-inch bay is standard for optical storage devices."

Adding to the xw3100`s high-performance computing abilities is the new Intel 865G chipset supporting a dual-channel DDR memory architecture and up to 4GB in 4 DIMM slots. The system is also optimised for Pentium 4 processors up to 3.2GHz with an 800MHz Front Side Bus.

The Pentium 4 is Intel`s first processor to support hyper-threading technology. Under Windows XP and Linux, hyper-threading enables the Pentium 4 processor to function as two virtual processors that can work on two sets of tasks simultaneously. This enables the processor to utilise its execution resources more efficiently. It runs multiple threads simultaneously to increase the number of transactions executed, delivering performance increases and improving user productivity.

"In addition to the hardware specifications, xw3100 users will find all the management software they need to effectively manage their systems," Wollheim explains. "Whether it`s ensuring all the latest software is updated and installed onto the machine, or managing each PC centrally as part of a network, HP has the tools to make it happen."
