Skype drops Windows Mobile app

Communications software company Skype has dropped Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Phones applications from its offerings, reports TMCnet.

“This isn't a decision we've taken lightly, but the reason is simple,” says the company. “Neither of these apps offered a great Skype experience.”

The company explains that Skype Lite only works in a small number of countries. Meanwhile, the newest version of Windows Mobile OS has challenged Skype to “maintain an app which behaves as you'd expect on a wide range of handsets without working with a mobile operator partner”.

Adobe Acrobat hits the iPhone

Adobe has made its Acrobat Connect Pro enterprise Web conferencing mobile application available for the iPhone and iPod touch, states Computing.co.uk.

iPhone owners can now use the application to participate in Connect Pro meetings, training sessions and Web seminars, and access other forms of information, the firm said.

Adobe claims that Acrobat Connect Pro also enables participants to watch and listen to live presentations such as real-time Web camera video and screen-sharing demonstrations, while mobile users can collaborate using live chat.

Parallels intros Mac bare-metal

Parallels has introduced a bare-metal virtualisation product for Apple's Xserve that allows Windows and Linux virtual machines to run side-by-side with the Mac OS X operating system, says ZDNet.

Parallels Server for Mac Bare Metal Edition, unveiled last week at the Parallels Summit 2010 in Miami, is aimed at companies wishing to standardise on Mac hardware and at cloud services providers that want to add Mac OS X capabilities, the company said.

The company's original virtualisation product for Xserve allowed instances of Mac OS X, Linux or Windows to run as virtual machines on top of an OS X host. With the new product, those virtual machines can all run directly on the Xserve's hardware, with a hypervisor present to co-ordinate the different guests.
