Skype for iPhone goes 3G
Skype will be rolling out a Skype for iPhone application that can place calls over 3G networks, reports eWeek.
Last year, Skype released a Skype voice-over Internet Protocol (VOIP) solution that worked only over WiFi networks.
Neil Mawston, an analyst from Strategy Analytics, says: “Skype will be hoping that iPhone users, who tend to be very active in exploring new apps, represent an inflection point that will drive higher usage of mobile Skype. Google, with its voice app, will be watching closely.”
VOIP hacker arrested
A Miami man has admitted to hacking into the networks of several VOIP providers and reselling millions of stolen minutes, states Computerworld.
Edwin Pena pleaded guilty to the US federal court of conspiracy to commit computer hacking and wire fraud. Pena was returned to the US after being a fugitive for three years.
Assistant US attorney Erez Liebermann says: "This case sends a clear message to perpetrators that they can be caught and prosecuted, and to companies that there are steps they should be taking to secure their networks."
Comcast buys out NGT
Comcast is set to acquire VOIP services provider, New Global Telecom, says TMCnet.
The acquisition is a strategic move by Comcast to try and capture the small and medium enterprise voice and data market.
Last year, Comcast bought Cimco Communications, a US local exchange carrier; which has about 2 300 business customers.
