Skype unveils third-party apps directory
The directory will help raise awareness of apps using Skype's application programming interface. However, it also represents a shift in the company's relationship with its developer community, which it hasn't always been on the best of terms with in the past.
The new Skype App Directory has only revealed that there are only a few applications listed at the moment, but Skype hopes to add many more over the coming weeks, reports Geeky Gadgets.
They are separated into categories for business call recording and desktop and whiteboard sharing for example, and each application has its own landing page providing more detailed information and requirements about the app, together with a price and purchase button.
There are currently five apps in the business category. These include: outbound dialler for virtual call centre, PrettyMay call centre for Skype, virtual call centre, VuRoom and Zaplee, according to WebProNews.
For call recording, there are four apps for audio and video, and six apps for audio only. There are three apps in the desktop/whiteboard sharing category, two in faxing, and two in mobile video communications (including Qik, which Skype recently acquired).
The only “integration with popular software” currently offered is Skylook for MS Outlook. The apps in the directory are available for either Windows PCs or Macs or both.
