Slideshow: Wikipedia plea becomes social meme

What was originally just a plea, featuring the photograph of Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales, has been switched up with a message from a developer, Brandon Harris. Harris' stern pose, long hair and facial expression, have become topics of conversation on Twitter.

While the plea for donations itself is heartfelt, the odd left-alignment of the picture has led to some amusing ambiguity when Harris and Wales' portraits appear above the titles of Wikipedia entries.

In the message from Wales, appealing for donations, he says: “Google might have close to a million servers. Yahoo has something like 13 000 staff. We have 679 servers and 95 staff.

“If everyone reading this donated R25, we would only have to fundraise for one day a year. But not everyone can or will donate. And that's fine. Each year just enough people decide to give.

“Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn't belong here. Not in Wikipedia,” says Wales.
