The SLIS (Special Libraries & Information Services Group)/Sabinet Senior and Junior Information Specialists Awards 2005 winners were announced on 16 November at the SLIS Annual General Meeting which took place at the Lipizzaner Centre in Kyalami.
Charmaine Bertram, Library Manager at Deneys Reitz Inc, was awarded as the Senior Information Specialist of the Year 2005. Bertram has worked hard to change the traditional image of her firm's library, from that of custodian and supplier of information to one of a partnership between the users and the library.
She also managed to establish the library as a vital part of the company. Bertram is an inspiration and role model to all information centre and library managers in the information industry, because of her passion and commitment towards her profession.
She impressed the judges with her marketing and leadership skills and her ability to build networks within her company but also with her peer professionals in the legal environment. She is a worthy winner and a definite asset to the information specialist profession.
Not only did Deneys Reitz walk away with the Senior Information Specialist Award, but Simon Zwane, library assistant in the Deneys Reitz Library, was also awarded as the Junior Information Specialist of 2005. Zwane is a very deserving winner of this award. Within a decade he has build a set of remarkable achievements to display. It is fitting that exactly 10 years after he started his career at Deneys Reitz as a messenger, he has now received this professional career award.
During these 10 years he has managed to complete a National Diploma in Library Science and he is studying towards a B.Tech degree. He has also made valuable contributions to the library and information services industry's associations during this time. Zwane is a role model for both young and the more experienced information specialists as to what can be achieved if you set your mind to it.
With a modest and quiet professionalism about him, Zwane displays a remarkable sense of vision, courage, perseverance and determination to succeed.
