Local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were recognised for the contribution they make to SA's economy, at the first 702 Small Business Awards, in conjunction with Softline Pastel.
Listeners were asked to nominate a small business that has benefited its community. The competition, sponsored by Softline Pastel, received 1 116 nominations.
The winners were announced at the Primedia offices in Sandton.
702 Talk Radio host John Robbie said it's been one of the most successful initiatives conducted by 702, and the winners were chosen based on their motivation, positive impact on their communities and growth potential.
Pheladi Gwangwa, 702 station manager, said: "These businesses are the entrepreneurial roots of the economy and 702 realises how often these SMEs are overlooked, and felt it was time to reward the small businesses that go beyond the call of duty for their customers. We believe the 30 finalists are all worthy winners."
Steven Cohen, MD of Softline Pastel, said small businesses are the driving force behind the economy, and Softline wanted to acknowledge them. "Softline Pastel has over 180 000 businesses that use our software. The initiative is a great way in which to give recognition to successful SMEs. The awards are about motivating small businesses and instilling passion. This is the first time we did this and we hope next year will have more momentum, and that small businesses will be more recognised."
