Smart` Kuwait office complex among most technologically advanced in Middle East

3Com solutions power United Realty Company City Towers with array of wireless, networked telephony and high-bandwidth, high-speed Internet connections
Johannesburg, 08 Feb 2002

Leading Middle East real estate company, United Realty Company (URC), has developed one of the first ever `smart buildings` in Kuwait.

Powered by an end-to-end 3Com networking solution, the URC City Towers business complex offers the most technologically advanced and modern networking infrastructure to companies operating in Kuwait. The URC network combines 3Com`s market-leading Gigabit Ethernet switching and networked telephony technologies together with a 3Com wireless LAN solution.

Developed and owned by United Realty Company, the URC City Tower is a state-of-the-art, multimillion-dollar facility designed specifically for enterprises that use bandwidth-intensive business applications and that require fast, secure and reliable Internet access. Since going live with the 3Com networking solution, the 20-storey business complex has become home to government ministries, local and international airlines and IT companies.

"In providing the most technologically advanced and modern networking infrastructure available on the market, URC City Tower represents a unique and unparalleled facility for enterprise customers in Kuwait," said Assaad Assaad, vice president of IT, URC.

"Using 3Com`s market-leading networking solution suite, this truly `smart building` is capable of meeting the most sophisticated and application-intensive demands of the modern enterprise. Our tenants get the benefits of a network that provides greater bandwidth, scalability, performance, security and Internet access. By providing an infrastructure that enables faster communications and higher volumes of information exchange, organisations benefit from increased employee productivity and therefore business profitability."

The 3Com solution at URC features eight 3Com Switch 4007 switches at the core in a complete redundant/resilient configuration together with 60 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 3300 switches at the edge, representing an average of three per floor in a redundant configuration. A 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX Networked Telephony solution using 600 3Com NBX Business Phones was also installed, delivering integrated, simultaneous voice and data over the LAN. With the addition of 40 3Com AirConnect Access Points, URC City Towers also provides its tenants with wireless networks beyond the desktop to conference rooms, lobbies and other public spaces.

"While URC initially required connectivity for up to 600 stations, we designed a solution that is scalable to many thousands of users as their needs, and the needs of their tenants, grow in the future. This solution represents the largest number of core switches in the core of any site in the Middle East," said Tony Nasr, 3Com area manager for the Gulf, Levant & Yemen.

"Through the deployment of a resilient/redundant, feature-rich solution that is easy to install, maintain and configure, URC offers its customers the most technologically advanced network that is capable of maximizing bandwidth while cost-effectively limiting network congestion. At the same time, using the 3Com wireless LAN solution, URC customers can also enjoy `universal access` to the vast resources and connected nature of the Internet."
