
Smartphone tracking SIM developed
A South Korean consortium that includes SK Telecom, has developed a universal subscriber identity module card that enables smartphones to track an item, reports RFID Journal.
The USIM card features 900MHz radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader chip that can read passive ultrahigh-frequency tags complying with the EPC Gen 2 standard.
Yoon Jin-Hee, senior manager of SK Telecom's wireless personal area network development team, says it confirms goods authenticity: "When a tag code is read, information is sent from the server through wireless networks and appear on the user's mobile screen. It allows users to receive product history information.”
Next-gen RFID wristband unveiled
Radiant RFID and Precision Dynamics have released a Gen 2 UHF Wristband, states More RFID.
This next-generation wristband is composed of silicone material which enables it to function and be worn for extended periods, the company says, such as days, weeks and even months.
It is intended for RFID tracking applications requiring comfort and long wear such as cruise ships, theme parks, trade shows, festivals and long-term special events.
HID Global hires RFID chief
HID Global has appointed industry veteran Jean-Miguel Robadey to run the company's identification solutions RFID animal tagging business, says India Info Line.
As global director, Robadey will be responsible for extending HID's two-decade-long leadership in RFID tagging into the rapidly growing market for solutions that improve the traceability of individual animals through the supply chain.
According to market research firm IDTechX, the RFID business has grown despite the global financial meltdown and is a business of well over $5 billion. The firm says the market is expected to triple in the next 10 years.
