SMC has announced a series of new Fast Ethernet dual-speed hubs. The new 8-port and 16-port dual-speed hubs are an addition to the EZ Hub 10/100 line joining the existing 4, 12 and 24-port models. "The SMC5608DS and SMC5616DS complete SMC`s line of low cost standalone dual-speed hubs offering small workgroup users the best price-performance solution migrating from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet environment," says Greg Perkins, country manager of SMC SA.
These two standalone hubs have 8 and 16 RJ-45 ports respectively. All ports can auto-sense speed supported by the attached device. The space-saving design is ideal for Soho user and both models include an alternative MDI/MDIX port for easy connection with other devices. To connect more users as the network grows, maximum two Class II compliant hubs can be daisy-chained together. The built-in 10/100Mbps switch supports a maximum of 1792 MAC address entries. The switch is responsible for confining local traffic in its respective domain and store and forward packets to another segment only if required, greatly reducing overall traffic.
At-a-glance LEDs indicate network status for easy monitoring and trouble shooting. "These additions to SMC`s line of standalone dual-speed hubs are targeted specifically at departmental and workgroup environments requiring edge devices with features that support bandwidth-hungry applications and a gradual migration to Fast Ethernet," Perkins concludes.
