SMC Networks SA has appointed Maxtec to distribute its line of products in southern Africa.

Better known for its range of storage products, Maxtec has built up a skills base in the IP networking arena as a result of the move to storage networking.

"The effective management of storage resources requires a strong focus on networking to optimise connectivity between the LAN, servers and storage resources," says Stella Bakaniozos, sales director at Maxtec.

The local distributor has long been the South African representative of Perle Systems, a supplier of routers, RAS (Remote Access Server) solutions, AS/400 controllers, serial/print servers, console serves and multiport cards. "Adding SMC to the mix extends the range of networking solutions we can offer our resellers," she adds.

Bakaniozos says the addition of SMC to Maxtec's product portfolio will enable the local distributor to offer its resellers storage networking solutions to suit every business requirement.

"As good as it is, channel technology is not a 'one size fits all' solution to the storage networking challenge. [Fibre] is highly complex and can be expensive to implement. Gigabit Ethernet offers a workable, cost-effective alternative - particularly for smaller organisations," she notes.
