SMC Enterprise, a SAP and Microsoft partner, has embarked on a strategy to expand into the Middle Eastern market. Since 2002, the MEA region has experienced drastic shifts in how ICT services are procured, predominantly brought on by post- 9/11 events.
South African ICT professionals are held in high esteem in the ME market, which makes this a natural market for SA ICT companies. SAP consultancy skills are also much sought after in the region due to large implementations driven by the Oil industry. Couple this with a safe, secure environment with first-world infrastructure; the ME has never looked more interesting.
Says Allie Khan, SMC Enterprise Director: "On a recent trip to Dubai, we met a number of potential clients and partners in anticipation of the city's positioning as the financial hub of the Middle East. Dubai's growth has been phenomenal, and the need for services is where the next growth opportunity lies. With initiatives like Dubai Internet (Media) City and Dubai Medical City, one can already see where Dubai is positioning itself."
SMC plans to utilise its workforce in a combination of on and off-shore project teams, to deliver projects for MEA clients. These clients will have the benefit of face-to-face interaction, with skilled consultants onsite and a team back home in South Africa. This approach will ensure that SMC grows ICT skills capacity in South Africa, and becomes a net exporter of services.
