Expanding its range of high performance LAN solutions and offering a versatile Fast Ethernet switch for all manner of layouts, SMC has introduced the rack-mountable TigerSwitch 100M.This modular switch represents an enhancement on the original TigerSwitch 100 in that it offers extensive port and cabling combinations with four replaceable modules for twisted-pair (copper) or cable network environments.Greg Perkins, country manager at SMC, says that depending on the modules employed, the TigerSwitch 100M can cover a myriad network switching options."Customers can configure the switch for 100BASE-TX connectivity to a server farm or 100BASE-FX connectivity to a high speed fibre backbone. The device can also serve as a departmental backbone, offering dual speed Fast Ethernet connectivity to the desktop," he explains."Alternatively, the TigerSwitch 100M can be configured as a fibre optic switch to deliver 200 Mbps full duplex switching between long distance sites. Several units may be cascaded to create a high speed fibre or copper backbone for campus or building-to-building links. With the TigerSwitch 100M it is simply a matter of choosing the appropriate modules for the application required."From a cost of ownership standpoint the new switch is what Perkins describes as `elastic` - it will stretch and change as network plans evolve. "The Fast Ethernet modules can be replaced in response to changing network designs, thereby securing earlier LAN investments," he says.Management of the intelligent switch is also possible with SMC`s EliteView software or other third party network management application."The TigerSwitch 100M gives our customers a flexible and versatile unit at an excellent price point. It demonstrates our commitment to providing the SME market with real workgroup/departmental LAN solutions that simplify ," concludes Perkins.
