SMC puts switching on the desktop

Furthering its aim to make workgroup networking both more affordable and accessible, SMC Networks has announced its EZ Switch Desktop (DT) - a product which brings switching to the desktop. Greg Perkins, country manager of SMC Networks in South Africa, says the new product can be seen as a true hub-replacement switch because it is priced competitively against typical hub solutions. "Each user connected through such a device is guaranteed 10MBps of dedicated bandwidth and can take full advantage of the added performance of switched Ethernet," he points out, saying that this could also extend the life of existing network infrastructures. Perkins describes the new product as a 24-port, rack-mountable 10BASE-T switch which features a single MAC address for each port and has an uplink port, enabling it to be cascaded to another similar device. "EZ Switch DT is `plug and play` and employs a `cut-through` design with non-blocking architecture to allow simultaneous wire-speed transport of multiple packets at very low latency," he adds. Also featuring back-pressure flow control to prevent packet loss and a comprehensive array of status LEDs for easy network monitoring, the new switch is the perfect complement to any peer-to-peer or multi-server environment. It`s backed by a three-year warranty and free pre- and post-purchase technical support. SMC`s line of LAN infrastructure products includes the EZ and Tiger lines. While the EZ range provides the essentials with low-cost, plug-and-play network cards, hubs, stackable hubs, desktop and workgroup switches, the Tiger line offers performance and sophisticated functionality, such as hub-based segmentation, integrated switching and management capabilities. Customer satisfaction guaranteeThe EZ Switch DT is covered by SMC`s Customer Satisfaction Guarantee. This guarantee consists of four components: * a 30-day `money back` satisfaction guarantee, * a 24-hour cross shipment product replacement policy, * toll-free technical support and * a three year warranty.
