In a change of Dell`s normal enterprise focus, it has announced two bundled solutions along with Microsoft for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The bundles comprise a standard and premium edition.

"Due to the high costs of technology, many SMEs have found it difficult to procure the right IT systems and infrastructure...for the job," says Tony Bogatie, director of the enterprise systems group at Dell SA.

The standard bundle "enables peer-to-peer users to enter the networked environment with a low-cost, turnkey solution, comprising all hardware, , installation and support needed to kick-start their first ". Software includes Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003.

Bogatie adds: "This is the first bundled SME server solution to break the R10 000 price point. The high cost of servers, support and software has long been the biggest barrier to entry for SMEs. This solution has enough memory, hardware capacity, backup and related applications as well as services beyond just installation."

The premium offering provides the same features as the standard, plus database functionality with SQL Server, Web-building tools through FrontPage and ensures through the inclusion of ISA Server firewall software.

"Windows Small Business Server 2003 [enables] cost-efficient and productivity-boosting computing for the smaller enterprise, with security, e-mail and Web-based technology," says Desmond Nair, product manager for the server and platform group at Microsoft SA.

All servers will include a modem and backup device. Dell will offer pre-sales advice and support through its call centre and Web site, and take care of supply and delivery. Customers can also have server and network operating system installations.

"We must remember that this market is not interested in being locked into SLAs [service level agreements], nor will it invest extensively in technology it doesn`t need. We believe that this solution not only addresses their needs but allows them to grow their technology investment alongside that of their business," says Bogatie.
