SMEs now have access to an affordable server solution thanks to the release of the Shakeng Server by local ICT solution provider Matsema.
The locally developed enterprise communications server is based on the open source Linux operating system, which means that there are no software licence fees associated with the product.
The server supports Windows networking and comes pre-installed with open source products including Jboss, a Java application server, as well as the MySQL and Postgres database engines. It also comes configured with a Web server, a firewall and an e-mail server with anti-virus and spam filtering.
Jacqui Moabelo, corporate business and marketing manager at Matsema, believes the major concerns for small businesses are the firewall, anti-virus and spam filtering because of the threat of lost data. "Shakeng Server enables SMEs to protect their networks from Internet-borne threats," says Moabelo.
Another feature of the server is that it does not require a dynamic IP address for the mail server. "E-mail servers require a static IP address to allow external servers to locate and deliver messages to them," says Moabelo. "Matsema`s virtual private network (VPN) removes this need by using a VPN solution - which allows for e-mail delivery to connection-types that don`t support a static IP address."
The Shakeng server supports vanilla 56k dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, Diginet and satellite connections. According to Moabelo, a simple Web browser interface is all that`s needed for configuration and management of the server.
Matsema charges a monthly fee - starting at R498 - for the solution, to remotely and regularly update the virus tables and software as well as to provide ISP services such as the VPN connection, domain hosting and e-mail spooling. Online and telephone support is included.
