Today's SME market understands the importance of stable databases, code and language and the emerging businesses want solutions that offer stability and reduced cost of ownership.
This is according to Accountmate MD, Stephen Corrigan, who says SMEs, like any other enterprise, need accounting software that can offer stability and take data corruption out of the equation.
“SMEs need totally stable accounting software that has features that can connect dynamically to the database, making data losses and database corruption a curse of the past,” he adds.
Unstable accounting solutions expose businesses to threats, including downtime and maintenance costs, he says. “Instability also exposes businesses to fraud and theft, particularly where database corruption cannot be properly restored.”
According to Corrigan, modern technology has greatly reduced the total cost of ownership and boosted accessibility. He adds that today, SMEs need accounting software which has integrated remote terminal functionality allowing users to log onto it from anywhere in the world, without the need to purchase any remote connection software and still having the exact interface as any other user on the system.
Functionality
He points out that the software needs to have strong general ledger functionality with departments and cost centres, offering enterprise features while maintaining an SME look and feel. The program must not have connectivity issues, Corrigan adds.
“A user should operate even when he or she is halfway through entering an invoice and even if the network cable is pulled, there will be no effect - the invoice will still be there and no data is lost. All transactions roll back automatically if not posted in full, such as during a power failure or sudden network disconnection.”
He also adds that the accounting software for SMEs, just like bigger enterprises, should be easier to re-apply and assign resources across the products.
Corrigan is of the view that while offering powerful functionality and stability, the software should not compromise ease of use even for the larger enterprise, with a common interface to process up to five different functions.
This is including creating, crediting or amending invoices from the same processing screen, each with its own security level and complete audit trail, he notes.
