A survey conducted to determine the penetration of IT in the small to medium enterprise (SME) market has found that a sizeable portion of respondents in this market intends spending up to R100 000 in the next year on upgrading computer systems and networks.

Run by support company Netsurit and co-sponsored by Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Intekom and ITWeb, the survey garnered 3 000 responses from companies in various industry sectors, with the majority of respondents coming from the IT, finance, insurance and business services sectors.

The questionnaire covered areas such as the number of employees as compared to the number of PCs within each company, use of e-mail, access, type of Internet connection, and the prevalence of networked PCs.

Other aspects under the spotlight were the operating systems run on workstations and servers, and the type of messaging and database applications used.

While interpretation of the results by BMI-TechKnowledge analysts is still pending, initial findings reveal that most SMEs run networked PCs across which e-mail connectivity and digital dial-up Internet access is high.

More SMEs run Microsoft operating systems and database applications, a fact which Orrin Klopper, MD of Netsurit says is due to a need for easy to use applications.

Other findings point to an increasing awareness of the importance of data protection (78% use some form of backup) and a very definite intention to spend more money on upgrading IT systems.
